Dr. B. Akbar Saheb completed his MBBS from Guntur Medical College and MS from Government Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Hyderabad, under the guidance of eminent eye surgeon, Padma Bhushan Prof. Siva Reddy, and has worked in government service for more than four decades, which includes 25 years in rural areas.
He is highly skilled in performing all kinds of eye surgeries and has a record of being deputed for Foreign Medical Service by the government of Andhra Pradesh. Apart from being a life member of the Indian Medical Association, All India Ophthalmic Society, and Eye Bank Association of India, Andhra Pradesh. Dr. B. Akbar is also honored as an Ophthalmic Society Fellow by the Academy of Sciences AP, President of District Nursing Homes Association (for the last 15 years), and also is the Vice-President of the State & Chairman of Rotary Eye Care and Prevention of Blindness.
Dr. B. Akbar Saheb was also the in charge of the research project “Brown Cataract” with Oakland University, U.S.A, and has performed a rare operation called “Chondro Sarcoma Lacrymayl Bone,” which is the first of its kind in India. He is the advisor for the planning and development council for several colleges and has also established seven permanent scholarships for the best outgoing students from high schools to college levels.
He is the first life member of the Eye bank of India in Rayalaseema that has collected more than 300 eyes for corneal transplantation for the last 9 years. In fact, Dr. Akbar Super Speciality Eye Hospital Phaco, Laser & Lasik Center at Anantapuramu was recognized by the National Eye Bank Association of India for bringing awareness among the public for eye and blood donations. He has also organized more than 1,600 rural eye camps in the Anantapuramu area to operate more than 75,000 cataract operations with the help of his son Dr. Altaf Akbar (FRCS, London), a leading eye surgeon. Considering Dr. B. Akbar Saheb’s commitment toward social service, the Government of India, deputed him to Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia to treat the eye patients among the pilgrims.
Dr. B. Akbar Saheb has been felicitated by the AP Academy of Sciences as a fellow of the academy (FAPS) and has received the Millennium Endowment award from eminent eye surgeon Padma Bhushan Dr. P. Siva Reddy for being the “Best Medico & Socio Ophthalmologist” for his social services, especially for eradication of blindness. Andhra Pradesh Nursing Homes Association has also awarded him with the lifetime achievement award at the state convention. Plus, he got the Rotary International’s highest award, “Service Above Self,” in the USA. He also received the Ugadi Puraskar in 2015 from the then CM of Andhra Pradesh, Sri Chandra Babu Naidu, at Amaravathi.
